Medical Dentistry – Dentistry is a branch of medicine that mainly deals with the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases of the oral cavity, including teeth, gums, and mouth diseases. Dentistry in Iran covers a wide range of dental care procedures. These procedures can range from cosmetic dentistry to medical dentistry.
Of the two branches of dentistry, medical dentistry is of high importance, as it deals with the diseases of oral cavity, and aims to diagnose and treat issues like infection, inflammation, and other common problems and diseases.
Examples of common medical dentistry procedures are dental implants, dental filling, orthodontics, crowns, dentures, and dental bridges.
Mainly, there are four types of medical dentistry procedures that are as follows:
Diagnostic procedures. Diagnostic procedures are used to recognize patient’s medical condition. The procedures include examination, consultation, and bacterial testing including test that are used to discover the source of pain.
Non-surgical treatments. Non-surgical treatments include emergency treatments for any kind of infection, incision, or even patients suffering from anorexia or bulimia.
Surgical treatments. Tooth extraction and dental implants are examples of surgical treatments in medical dentistry.
Treatment for traumatic injuries. Once an in injury is treated, all treatments that restore original look of the mouth are considered as treatments for traumatic injuries.
It should also be noted that some dentistry procedures are common between medical and cosmetic dentistry.
Most Common Dentistry Services (Medical Dentistry and Cosmetic dentistry):
Dental implants are artificial replacements for teeth’s roots. In the same way roots support natural teeth, dental implants directly fit into your jawbone and hold false teeth or crowns in place.
Dental implants are made of different materials including titanium, and they are fixed in place with an internal screw called abutment.
For a successful dental implant, you need to have healthy gums and strong jawbone.
In case you take good care of them, they can last for the rest of your life.
Crowns, also called caps, can restore the shape, color, and function of the original tooth. They are simply fit over the remaining of a natural tooth.
Crowns are made of different types of materials including metal, porcelain, and ceramic, and combination of these materials.
Porcelain Veneers (Dental Laminates)
A veneer is a thin shell of porcelain that is bonded to a tooth to improve its color and shape. Veneers significantly improve your smile. A veneer generally covers only the front and top of a tooth. Veneers can be used to close the spaces between teeth, and lengthen smaller or misshapen teeth. Veneers can also protect the teeth from damage, and restore their original look.
People who drink lots of tea or coffee or red wine, and smoke, are common candidates for tooth whitening. Tooth whitening lightens your teeth by several shades.
Tooth whitening process should be carried out by a dentist or a dental professional, otherwise it may put your oral health at risk.
One of the most common methods of tooth whitening is using gels. Laser whitening, also known as power whitening, is another tooth whitening method carried out by a dentist.
In case there is too much damage or decay for the tooth that it cannot be fixed either by crowns or fillings or other dental treatments, it may need to be extracted or removed. Also some people may have extra teeth, or sometimes baby teeth do not fall out in time.
Tooth removal procedures include simple extraction, and surgical extraction. Simple extraction is used for the teeth that can be seen in the mouth and is a simple procedure. Surgical extraction, on the other hand, is a bit more complex procedure.
Dental Filling (Tooth Filling)
Dental filling is the best treatment for teeth that have been damaged or decayed. Dental filling restores the damaged tooth to its normal shape and function. It also helps prevent further decay.
There are a number of materials used for fillings, including gold, porcelain, composite resin, and amalgam. Depending on the extent of the repair, and considering your allergies to certain materials, your dentist chooses the most suitable material for your treatment.
Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling and root planing procedure, also known as non-surgical periodontal therapy or deep cleaning, involves removing dental plaque and cementum. In the procedure the exposed surface of the root is then smoothed.
If you have any symptoms including swollen or red or bleeding teeth, bad breath or bad taste in your mouth, or loose teeth, scaling and root planing is recommended to treat periodontal diseases. It also keeps your teeth and gum healthy.
If you have a missing tooth, bridges are the best technique to cover the space between the teeth. The imbalance caused by a missing tooth, can lead to bad bites and more importantly to gum disease and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, or even difficulty in speech.
Bridges along with crowns can strengthen a damaged tooth, and also improve the tooth’s appearance and shape.
Bridges and crown are cemented onto existing teeth or implants, and they only can be removed by a dentist.
Dentures, also called removable false teeth, are made of different materials including acrylic, nylon, or metal. They securely fit over the gums and jawbones, as soon as your teeth are removed, and they can be easily removed.
Considering your condition and the number of missing teeth, you may need complete dentures, that is a full set, or partial dentures.
Dentures help you speak clearly, eat comfortably, improve the appearance of your smile, and they also make you more confident.
Severely crooked and protruding teeth not only are difficult to keep clean, but they also can leave you more at risk of damage. Orthodontics could also be considered as a cosmetic dental treatment for many patients.
Different types of braces including Invisalign, Inman aligners, Simpli5 aligners, Fast acting braces, and Damon braces transform the appearance of your smile and straighten your teeth. Other benefits of braces are long term results, less damage to your teeth, and facilitating speaking and cleaning the teeth.
