Chin augmentation or chin reshaping surgery (genioplasty or mentoplasty) is a plastic surgery done on chin. It aims to enhance facial beauty by repositioning or reshaping the chin, and can be done by both plastic surgeons and maxillofacial surgeons (surgeons who work on the mouth and jaw) under general anesthesia. Genioplasty is the surgery to enhance the size of the chin and mentoplasty is reduction of the chin size.

chin augmentation

It is noted that for the surgery, the candidates should be at least 20 years old, when the chin is fully developed.

Chin surgery can be carried out through various procedures as follows:
• Advancement Genioplasty (moving the chin forward)
• Pushback (moving the chin backward)
• Side-to-side (which can help with asymmetrical chins
• vertical changes, such as making the chin longer or shorter

The procedure will vary depending on the type of the surgery, that is whether it is chin reduction or augmentation, but generally, the bone within the chin will be broken in a controlled way, so that it can slide forwards or backwards to be repositioned and fixed into the desired place.

It has permanent results, and unlike what might be expected, it is not painful.

Types of chin reshaping surgeries

There are two common ways for carrying out genioplasty. The ways are shortly clarified below.

Osseous or sliding genioplasty

It is one of the most frequently done forms of genioplasty, since it easily adapts or can be adapted to many different functions. It can therefore be used to augment or reduce the size of the chin. In this method, the bone of the chin is broken, and then it can slide forward and backward to augment or reduce the size of the chin, respectively. For increasing or reducing the length of the face, the bone may also be moved up or down, as well.

Asymmetric chin point surgery

This method, being a complex form of genioplasty, requires skills of a highly trained aesthetic surgeon. The surgeon should both be able to carry out the surgery delicately and diagnose the conditions that cause facial problems including dental problems which can result in disorders of the jaw.

Pre-treatment advice

You should clearly explain your expectations of the surgery. Careful discussions about your reasons for genioplasty surgery are very important. Make sure you obtain the necessary information. You should also avoid taking aspirins before the surgery, as it increases the risk of bleeding.

How is the procedure?

The surgeon will make an incision through your gum. The chin bone is then cut, which enables the surgeon to break the chin bone in a controllable way. Then he moves the bone to its new position and fixes it into place with tiny screws. The incision will then be sewn up with dissolvable stitches.

Post-surgery instructions for chin reshaping surgery

Swelling of the chin is normal right after the surgery. It can last for about two weeks. You will also feel groggy because of the general anesthesia. The surgeon will also prescribe intravenous antibiotics to prevent infection. You will also experience a feeling of numbness on the lower lip and inside the mouth.

It is recommended to use cold press to treat any bruise and swelling. To treat any pain, you can take painkillers.
