What is brow lift?
A brow lift or eyebrow lift, sometimes referred to as forehead lift, upper facelift, and browplasty, is a facial rejuvenation procedure intended to enhance your appearance that has been marred by droopy eyebrows and other signs of aging, including skin laxity, wrinkles, and furrows.
What can brow lift surgery fix?
Generally speaking, browplasty is aimed at upper face rejuvenation. Whether you’re born with heavy brows and ‘hooded eyes’ or the process of aging has affected your appearance, causing your forehead skin to lose its elasticity, leading to wrinkles, furrows, frown line, and sagging skin, an eyebrow lift will fix them all.
The main benefits of a brow lift surgery can be summarized as follows:
- Increased self-confidence and positive feeling about your look;
- A troubled, angry face replaced with a more radiant and cheerful one;
- People no longer mistakenly perceive you as a ‘too serious’, unapproachable person.
Am I a candidate for brow lift surgery?
As we grow older, our facial skin shows signs of aging. In fact, if one is to guess our age, he/she judges it by our face and the wrinkles and sagging of the skin. A brow lift surgery is one of those cosmetic procedures that make you look younger and more youthful.
The frown line and forehead wrinkles you have on your face make you look too serious and angry, even when you are actually in a good mood. The skin laxity that happens as a result of aging may also push your brows down, making your eyes ‘hooded’, which in turn makes you look drowsy and tired.
If you are having these vexing problems, a forehead lift can put an end to them all. The ideal candidates for brow lift surgery are, however, those with good health, realistic expectations, and a positive outlook. They should also understand that the results they get from the procedure may not be exactly the same as what they see in eyebrow lift before and after photos, because the anatomy and skin of the face are different in different people.
Be sure to consult with a qualified specialist to discuss the matter before going for a browplasty. An experienced plastic surgeon can help you determine if you are a good candidate for eyebrow lift surgery. Feel free to contact us for a free consultation by sending a few photos of your upper face. Our plastic surgeons will advise you on your problems with your upper face and will tell you if you are the right candidate for a brow lift procedure.
How is a brow lift surgery performed?
A consultation is held between you and the surgeon before surgery. The surgeon examines your face to check the skin type, skin laxity, and degree of brow sagging. He/she also hears your expectations and desired results.
A forehead lift surgery is carried out either under general anesthesia or IV sedation. If general anesthesia is used, you will be asleep during the procedure, completely unaware of what is happening. In the case of local anesthesia or IV sedation, you will be awake but you won’t feel any pain.
Depending on the technique the surgeons uses, he/she makes the necessary incision(s) within the hairline, eyebrow or in the forehead, and then pulls the skin up and removes the excess skin. After the completion of the surgery, the surgeon uses sutures or skin adhesives to close the incision.
Types of brow lifts
There are three common techniques for forehead lift surgery.
- Traditional technique (coronal brow lift or open brow lift)
- Endoscopic technique
- Limited incision technique (temporal brow lift)
Open eyebrow lift (coronal brow lift)
In a traditional brow lift, your surgeon makes a long incision across the forehead, either around the hairline or in one of the wrinkles of the forehead, and then lifts the skin. Then he/she removes any excess skin, and pulls the remaining skin together, realign the muscles if necessary, and then stitching up the incision.
Endoscopic eyebrow lift
In the endoscopic brow lift method, your surgeon makes several tiny incisions in the scalp and then inserts an endoscope in the scalp. The endoscopic technique might not be suitable for all patients but it causes less bruising and the recovery is faster.
Temporal brow lift
This is a minimally invasive procedure that can be done under local anesthesia in the surgeon’s office. A temporal eyebrow lift is often combined with an eyelid surgery. It involves making incisions above the temples behind the hairline to reposition the tissues of the outer brow area.
What to do before a brow lift surgery?
Here are a few pre-operative tips for a forehead lift:
- You should stop smoking at least 6 weeks before the surgery, as it slows the healing process;
- You should stop alcohol a few weeks before surgery;
- You need to stop taking aspirin;
- Hydration is very important;
- You may want to grow your hair long to cover the scars after the surgery.
- Ask your doctor to give you instructions about the recovery and explain the potential risks and complications.
Brow lift surgery recovery and post-care
You may feel uncomfortable or notice a feeling of tightness in your forehead after the surgery. For some two weeks following the surgery, you have swelling and bruising in the surgical sites.
Depending on whether you have a brow lift alone or in conjunction with other procedures (such as facelift or eyelid surgery). A recovery timeline for a typical eyebrow lift is as follows:
- Surgery day: it is recommended to walk around the house.
- 1-2 days after surgery: showering is allowed but you must be gentle with the incision sites.
- 1 week after surgery: you can return to work on the condition it doesn’t require strenuous physical activity. Some people can resume work earlier. If you’re worried about visible bruising, camouflage makeup can be a good idea to make it less visible.
- 1-2 weeks after brow lift: you can resume driving if you don’t take pain medications that affect your driving ability.
- 2 weeks to 1 month after surgery: you can gradually resume exercises with the approval of your surgeon.
Other tips for fast recovery after forehead surgery
- Apply ice or cold packs around the eyes for 48 hours after surgery to reduce the swelling.
- Drink plenty of water and fluids to keep your body hydrated.
- It is recommended that you sleep with your head elevated for almost 5 days.
Risks and complications of brow lift
Every surgery has potential risks and complications. The most common side effects of a forehead lift are pain, bruising, swelling, and scarring. The more serious risks of an eyebrow lift surgery include bleeding, loss of sensation, facial asymmetry, infection, elevated hairline, serious scarring, nerve injury, fluid accumulation, poor wound healing, and eye irritation or dryness.
The chance of developing complications after browplasty can be greatly reduced by choosing a board-certified and experienced surgeon and following the post-op instructions provided by the surgeon.
Brow lift vs. facelift
It is sometimes difficult to tell which cosmetic procedure is right for a person who wants to get their face rejuvenated. Procedures can be customized and combined for different people to address their specific needs. As said earlier, a brow lift is intended to address the upper face problems, thus it is sometimes called upper facelift. A mid-facelift and lower facelift, on the other hand, improve the sagging skin and jowls on the middle and lower sections of the face.
Brow lift vs. eyelid surgery
As the name suggests, an eyelid surgery (or blepharoplasty) is aimed at correcting the deformities of the lids (upper and lower eyelids). While it can be combined with an eyelid surgery, a brow lift surgery alone doesn’t involve altering the eyelids directly, though the lifting of the eyebrows improves the eyelids as well.
