Sleeping after Breast Augmentation: What You Need to Know
Breast augmentation is not a one-stop destination but a progressive journey. During this whole journey, there are steps that you should follow in order to achieve the best possible results.
One of the most challenging issues you would face during recovery is how to sleep after you get your breasts augmented. And here's the most useful information on how to sleep properly after your surgery.
Why does sleeping after breast augmentation matter so much?
There are four main reasons why you need to take caution when sleeping after your breast surgery.
First of all, your breasts implants should not be under any pressure in order to be secured in place properly. So, you must sleep in a way that they are not pushed to another spot. Plus, choosing a comfortable position for a few weeks after surgery can help you get out of bed easily.
Second, getting enough sleep and in the right position will help you heal quicker. When you are sleeping, your body concentrates on your healing, more blood flows across the injured tissues of your breasts, and more oxygen is delivered.
Third, sleeping correctly can reduce wrinkles forming around your new breasts.
Fourth, sleeping can ease the pain. As you may already know, you will experience some level of pain and discomfort for a few days after getting breast implants. Sleeping around 8-10 hours after surgery is proved to ease the patient’s pain.
Post-op breast augmentation sleeping tips: how to sleep?
Now that you’re well aware of the benefits you will gain through proper sleeping, we want to give you some tips to sleep after breast augmentation without any concerns.
1) Sleep on your back while your head and shoulders are elevated
Although it may seem a bit difficult at first to sleep in a specific position, it’s the best way to recover faster. Sleeping on your back prevents fluid from accumulation, gets your blood circulating, and gives you the most beautiful results.
2) Use a pillow or recliner when sleeping
To stay in the elevated position, you can use an additional pillow or a recliner.
3) Don’t sleep on your stomach
Sleeping on your stomach will pose a lot of stress on your new boobs and may even get them out of their place. This is, in fact, a dangerous thing to happen, as the breasts’ movement can result in some complications like implants’ leakage or rupture.
4) Don’t roll onto your side
Rolling onto your side can be as dangerous as sleeping on your stomach as it puts pressure on the implants. Don’t do that, then!
5) Don’t drink sleep-disrupting substances
To enjoy a more effective sleeping time, try to stop having too much caffeine, alcohol, and sugar before going to bed. These substances hold you back from falling asleep and interfere with the mechanism of your biological clock.
How about sleeping flat?
After you get out of the recovery process, you can sleep flat (without keeping your head and shoulders raised). Usually, it takes 2 weeks for patients to be allowed to sleep flat.
How long after breast augmentation can I sleep on my stomach?
If you’re not comfortable sleeping on your back, you may be curious about how long you can’t sleep on your stomach. We recommend you to maintain the right sleeping position until at least 3-4 weeks after your surgery. After that, you can start to sleep flat (still on your back) and then go back to sleeping on the stomach.
Should I wear a bra to sleep after breast augmentation?
Wearing a bra is recommended after any type of breast lift or augmentation. Bras can maintain the breasts in a stable position, especially while you are taking a nap. They also reduce tension and help you have a smoother healing process.
Wear a supportive surgical bra for the first few days after your surgery. You can use a sports bra, too, during your recovery and until the end of the second month. However, the exact timing should be determined by your doctor.
Will I feel pain in sleep after breast augmentation surgery?
After getting breast implants, you may feel pain and soreness for a few days. This pain would stay with you when you are asleep. However, it will reduce if you get enough sleep. Furthermore, taking a warm shower before going to bed and taking pain medications can relax you and help you to sleep easily.
